Groups of parents, students and teachers will be interviewed. . We may have some visitors from the District and go through the SWOT process, which looks at the Strengths, Weakness, Opportunity, and Threats (aka opposition) to and of the school system. One of the Opportunities is the IEN or Idaho Education Network, which utilizes technology to be able to teach classes in numerous schools from a central location. This is a precursor to online education. Resources can be shared, such as the teaching of foreign languages at CHS and LCHS and being able to allow students at CHS to take Japanese (which is currently only offered at LCHS) and students at LCHS to take German (which is currently only offered at CHS). It also provides the opportunity for blended learning where the teacher is in the building, but the lecture is transmitted allowing face-to-face learning, online learning and broadcast learning. Revision of programs is taking place and the school is looking at creating an Advanced Learning Department that would focus on accelerated learning such as in math and offering AP math at CHS. Mr. Olson is working on moving the dual credit program to CHS so that students do not have to travel and lose out on other classes due to scheduling conflicts. He is working to have an adjunct professor here on campus or to have our teachers teach the courses. In the Professional Technical realm, KTEC will be offering study in 6 different areas and when students graduate from the program they will be employable in those areas. Mr. Olson is proposing to have additional programs at CHS the are not available at KTEC such as CAD, Sports Med, pre-engineering. The current KTEC plan has student there for half the school day and at traditional high school the other half of the day.

Minutes

Mission Statement

The Coeur d’Alene High School PTA is a non-partisan volunteer organization of parents and staff cooperating together to serve, support, and enhance our children’s educational process and to organize informational, social, and fundraising events throughout the school year.

Welcome: Chris Anderl, CHS PTA President welcomed everyone present and called the meeting to order at 6 pm. All present introduced themselves.

PTA will sell them at lunch on Wednesdays and Fridays. Renaissance is otherwise separate from the PTA budget.

Student Council: James Griffiths, ASB Secretary/Treasurer reported that Senior Start was held on Friday, September 9th. Class meetings have started taking place. Each class will have a booth for Homecoming. The sophomore class is sponsoring a dance on Friday, September 16th.

Counselor Report: Penny Atherton, Freshman Class Counselor reported that fall testing will be on October 12. 9th, 10thand 11thgraders will be taking the PSAT at no charge. There will be an evening later in the school year to go over the results with parents. Open House will be on Wednesday, September 28that 6:30 and will start in the gym. Parent Conferences will be on October 26thfrom 4:00 to 7:30. If any parent is not signed up for Skyward, please contact Laurie Humphries or Karen, in the office for assistance. Rick Jones, Junior Class Counselor has set up a Facebook page for the junior class. Abby White, Senior Class Counselor has sent out a letter to senior class parents. SAT/ACT testing has already started. For students that plan on attending a 4-year college, they should take the SAT 2 times during their junior year. NIC has it’s own placement test. For any students who want to meet with college recruiters, please see Laurie in the office to go through the binder of which recruiters are coming to CHS. Don’t forget that all seniors get 2 days off to visit colleges during the school year and those days do not count against them for being absent. Visiting colleges is very important prior to making the decision to attend-you can visit during the summer. For those students who need financial assistance to take the SAT, please see Miss White about scholarships. SAT prep courses are available-there are ones on-line (check collegeboard.org) and the school has books in the library that students can check out.  There are flyers in the office on how to sign up for the SAT/ACT and it is done on-line. The SAT is held at CHS and the ACT at LCHS. Both start at 7:45AM. Students must have a score to attend a 4-year college. Please note, that some schools accept both tests and others accept 1 or the other.  Ms. Atherton will be working with freshmen to start working on their résumé. There is a district wide Senior Parent Night on September 21stat Midtown-there will be a notice in the bulletin and an e-mail will be sent to senior parents.

Administrative Report: Mr. Olson, CHS Principal reported that ISATs and all individual state testing will to come to an end in 2014. After 2014 there will be a national test, based on a common core curriculum. Idaho has joined 10 other states in a consortium to form the new test. An individual group will be entrusted to write the new test. Texas and Alaska are the only states to not join a consortium. This test is to be a move towards increased college readiness particularly in math and science. The PSAT is the best predictor of college readiness. It breaks down the types of questions to help place students in appropriate classes. The “Ready Test” is a pre-PSAT given to 8thgraders for placement in high school. Giving the PSAT to 9th, 10thand 11thgraders helps them to learn to take the test and improve their scores.  The state will be requiring the SAT to graduate, which the state will pay for and students will have to complete it between their junior year and half way through senior year. He is using collaboration time to look at data on the evidence of learning. There will be walk thrus with administrative observation. The focus will be evaluative and learning, to learn from other teachers and find evidence of student learning. CHS is up for accreditation 2011-2012. The Task Force on Policies has is working on 3 areas of improvement: electronic devices, school climate and dress code. The policy on electronic devices has been published on the school district website for comment. The policy delineates that phones, iPods, earbuds, etc will not be on nor visible on campus, but are permitted for use outside of the building. This will apply not only to students, but also to teachers and staff. The policy on school climate is intended to make students feel safe and comfortable in school and not disrespected by other students. The policy on dress code is also out for comment on the district website. The basics include that shoulders need to be covered and that shorts need to be at least as long as down to the student’s fingertips. This policy will not be enforced until second semester so that there is time to educate students about the new policy. Dave Scammel has returned to CHS and wants to reinstate Freshman Connection.  Mr. Olson has requested that the PTA help support the costs of the copy machine so that those monies can be used for other classroom needs.

Committee Chairs:

Hospitality Chair: Alexis Koon reported that there would be the first faculty lunch of the year on September 27th. Please sign up to bring food and deliver it to Karen in the office on the morning of the 27th. A BIG “Thank you!” for the help with the freshman BBQ. It was suggested the Senior Mentors and Student Council attend the BBQ next year.

Renaissance Chair: Chris Anderl reported that it has been suggested that raising GPA 0.5 might be too lenient and the amount of increasing the GPA may be increased. Don’t forget: students with a 4.0 GPA are exempt from one test without penalty. Kootenai Coffee will be sold on Wednesdays and Fridays at lunch-please Contact Chris Anderl or Wendy Lloyd-Davies to sign up to help.
